With an abiding faith in the power of democarcy and the congress party as its most effective vehicle, he intiated and supported policies that aimed at building a just society. His critics who focussed only on his or on his pragamatism, failed to understand his choices and his dilemmas. He was a balanced thinker, a skilled writer, a talented speaker and an astute diplomat and an insightful administrator who left his mark on most areas of public policy. He is remembered for his never failing civility towards all and his appreciation of the good qualities of his friends, followers, critics and detractors. Born as a common man he is recognised as the leader of the common people.
